Graeme & Tony inspire with Aspire Channel Swim!

Grame & Tony at 16 milesOn Sunday 25 November, Larkfield Leisure Centre Health & Fitness Members, Graeme Kelly and Tony Saunders, set out to complete the 22 mile Aspire English Channel Swim in one day.

Graeme made it to 18.5 miles before shoulder pain stopped him in his tracks (or is that 'lane').  Tony went on to complete the full 22 miles - an epic effort - see his final lengths below! Both guys train regularly at the Centre and are keen users of the SWIMTAG tracking technology, which they wore on the day to track their swim.  All the stats for the day will appear here shortly.

This is the latest personal challenge for Graeme, who has a passion for extreme exercise, having completed a Double Continuous Ironman Triathlon, the run2max event (103 mile run) and the Continuous Triple Ironman in the last couple of years.

Tony enjoys a challenge and is a keen swimmer and all-round athlete having played rugby and rowed. Convinced by Graeme that the swim will be fun, Tony also has personal reasons for taking part in this fundraiser.

“Aspire is charity that is close to my heart. A number of my close friends have had spinal surgery and have come out the other side, unfortunately one is in a wheelchair. Most of all, my son had major concerns in his early life with a hemi vertebrae and fears of scoliosis.”

The Aspire Channel Swim is a national charity event that encourages participants to swim the length of the Channel over a 12 week period. All funds raised help to support spinal cord injury sufferers to live their lives independently.
